Beverly Cleary was born in McMinnville, Oregon and as a child lived in a town so small there was no public library. Even so, she loved books and reading from a very early age.
Mrs. Cleary’s books have won many awards including the National Medal of Art and many Newberry awards. When asked where she gets her ideas, she has replied,” From my own experience and the world around me.”
In 2000, to honor her invaluable contributions to children’s literature, Beverly Cleary was named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress.
